Description

Afternoon tea was introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the year 1840. The evening meal in her household was served fashionably late at eight o'clock, thus leaving a long period of time between lunch and dinner. The Duchess asked that a tray of tea, bread and butter and cake be brought to her room during the late afternoon, which became a habit. She began inviting friends to join her and thus the fashionable social event of ‘English afternoon tea’ was born. Traditional afternoon tea consists of a selection of finger sandwiches, scones served with clotted cream and preserves, small tea cakes and a choice of tea. The Grosvenor Victoria is an ideal retreat after a day of shopping or sightseeing and the perfect place to indulge in this famous English tradition!
