Description

In the Autumn of 2011, the Royal Academy of Arts will stage a landmark exhibition focusing on Edgar Degas’s preoccupation with movement as an artist of the dance. The exhibition will trace the development of the artist's ballet imagery throughout his career, from the documentary mode of the early 1870s to the sensuous expressiveness of his final years. This will be the first exhibition to present Degas's progressive engagement with the figure in movement, acted out against parallel advances in photography and early film that he was aware of or directly involved in. Degas Dancers will incorporate drawings, pastels, paintings, prints and sculpture by Degas, as well as photography by the artist and his contemporaries and samples of film from the period. It will bring together selected material from public institutions and private collections, including both
celebrated and little-known works by Degas.
