Legoland
History of LEGOLAND
LEGO® was founded by Ole Kirk Christiansen in 1934. The name comes from the Danish words "Leg godt", meaning "Play well". In 1968 the idea of making a permanent exhibition of LEGO models was hit upon and the first LEGOLAND opened in Billund, Denmark. In 1992 Windsor Safari Park went into receivership and four years later in 1996 LEGOLAND Windsor opened on the site, using 25 million LEGO bricks. Today, LEGOLAND Windsor currently offers over 50 interactive rides and attractions, 11 restaurants and cafés and seven shops. At its peak, LEGOLAND Windsor employs up to 155 full time staff and a further 775 seasonal staff. Since the opening of LEGOLAND Windsor, LEGOLAND California opened in 1999 and more recently LEGOLAND Deutschland opened in 2002.
Located on the former site of Windsor Safari Park and bordered by Windsor Great Park, LEGOLAND is naturally scenic. However, it can be difficult mixing historical 300-year-old oak trees with exotic plant-life like palm trees. The unique Miniland area is also a big challenge for the team as they have to employ special techniques to work around the intricate LEGO models that inhabit the area.
At LEGOLAND Windsor the entertainment is certainly hands-on. Children aged 3-12 can take to the road, soar through the skies and sail the seas in complete safety. With over 50 interactive rides, live shows, building workshops, driving schools and attractions, all set in 150 acres of beautiful parkland, LEGOLAND Windsor is a unique family theme park.
LEGOLAND parks are now a part of Merlin Entertainments Group. Merlin Entertainments Group ranks as Europe’s number one visitor attractions operator and second in the world after Disney. It operates 50 visitor attractions in 12 different countries worldwide.
