Otterton Mill Centre & Working Museum
Set beside the River Otter in one of Devon's loveliest valleys and just a mile from East Devon's world heritage Jurassic Coast, Otterton Mill is truly a haven.
Otterton Mill sits in the heart of the Otter Valley, a stunningly beautiful stretch of countryside rich in wildlife. At the mill we have embarked upon a programme of work to help sustain this precious landscape, its flora and fauna.
The mill is already home to a number of declining bird species (we have a healthy population of house sparrows, grey wagtails, dippers and more common garden species such as robins and blackbirds - swallows also return annually to nest); the River Otter supports a wide selection of fish including eels, brown trout and flatfish - all seen regularly at the mill - and all of which provide food for resident otters and kingfishers.
Otterton Mill celebrate the very best in local foods with our highly acclaimed restaurant, artisan bakery and devon food shop; exceptional works of art and west country crafts in our gallery and craft shop; ancient traditions with on-site milling; and world-class entertainment with our live music events.
There has been a working mill at Otterton since at least Norman times, when King William the Conqueror granted all the local land hereabouts to the abbots of St Michel of Normandy. The earliest written record of the mill is in the Domesday survey in 1068, which confirmed its status as one of the largest and most productive of the seventy mills in Devon.
All this and more in the idyllic setting of our historic working watermill and beautiful surrounding natural countryside. Otterton Mill is a place to relax, unwind, explore and most of all to enjoy.
Otterton Mill is now by far the most productive watermill in Devon, and the centre of a thriving complex of working buildings, all of which are open to visitors free of charge throughout the year.
