Stephenson Railway Museum

Re-live the glorious days of the steam railway at Stephenson Railway Museum in North Shields.
The Museum is home to George Stephenson's 'Billy', a forerunner of the world- famous Rocket. 'Billy' is joined by many other engines from the great age of steam including 'Jackie Milburn', named after the Newcastle United legend.
Discover how trains work with interactive exhibitions and learn about the impact of coal and electricity on ordinary people's lives.

Fun events and activities for all ages take place throughout the year.
Stephenson Railway Museum is managed by Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums on behalf of North Tyneside Council.

Stephenson Railway Museum was opened in 1986 to house the railway collections of Tyne & Wear Museums. Its name commemorates George and Robert Stephenson, the famous father and son who pioneered the steam railway.

The Museum is also the northern terminus and maintenance workshop for the North Tyneside Railway. Several of the Museum's exhibits are kept in working order for use and demonstration on the railway, including a unique 1909 electric locomotive. Unfortunately trains will not be running in 2009.

There are displays and exhibits which both illustrate the vital part railways have played in the region's history and also show how they continue to be relevant to today's transport needs.
