Swansea Museum

Swansea Museum is a fascinating treasure house of Swansea life.
Swansea Museum is a real treasure house of the ordinary and the extraordinary from Swansea past and present, and is a focus for the future of the city and its people, as well as providing a visitor experience that we hope you find enjoyable.

The Mumbles Train was the first passenger line in the world and started in March 1807.
The coaches were initially drawn by horses on the rails laid in 1804 to carry limestone from Mumbles to Swansea docks.  Steam locomotives took over from horses, and later the locomotives were replaced with an electric railway.
The Mumbles Train is remembered very fondly and many people have vivid memories of using it to travel between Swansea and Mumbles.

The main collection is located in the impressive stone building on Oystermouth Road, Swansea
Swansea Museum is the oldest in Wales. It was opened in 1841 by a group of local people who were known as The Royal Institution of South Wales, which gave the Museum building its original name.
