The Royal Mews at the Buckingham Palace was designed by the Nash. It is one of the finest working stables in existence and home to royal collection of coaches and carriages. The Royal Mews provides road transport for The Queen and members of the Royal Family by both horse-drawn carriage and motor car. The State vehicles are housed and maintained at the Royal Mews. Visitors can also see the carriage horses used in royal ceremonial processions. The most splendid of all coaches among the displays is Gold State Coach and these carriages are used for Royal and State occasions, State Visits, Weddings and the State Opening of Parliament. The Gold State Coach first used for the State Opening of Parliament by George III in 1762 and is used by the monarch only for coronation or jubilee celebrations.
The Royal Mews are home to the working horses that play an important role in The Queen's official and ceremonial duties. Another task of the Royal Mews is collecting a newly appointed foreign Ambassadors or High Commissioners from their official residence, conveying them in a carriage to Buckingham Palace for their audience with The Queen, and afterwards returning them to their residence.
