Hidden London - Clapham South: Subterranean Shelter

Description
Descend 11 levels under London and explore the historic shelters under Clapham South station. The cavernous, industrial shelters were finished in 1944, the last year of WW2, after a public call for more effective air raid shelters. Around 8,000 people could be housed in the tunnels, and the rudimentary bunk beds are still in place down there. Completed after the worst of the Blitz, the shelters were put to use housing people who migrated from the Caribbean to the United Kingdom on the HMT Empire Windrush after WW2.

Explore underground tunnels with almost a mile of winding corridors. War time signs on the walls point you in the direction of the medical aid post and the subterranean canteen, and don’t forget to look out for the upside down writing on the walls, scribbled by people lying on the bunk beds.
