The British drama Downton Abbey ran for five years and its unprecedented success has taken the world by storm. With fans of the show spread across the globe, the entirety of the series is shot on British soil.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n

Recently, we had an awesome opportunity to take a trip to visit some of the best-known locations from the series. We even saw Downton itself, or Highclere Castle as it’s actually known. Highclere Castle is a 6,000-acre estate in Hampshire, England, and it’s only open to the public at limited times of the year.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Here are 14 fun facts you probably didn’t know about Downton Abbey and Highclere Castle:<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

1. <\/strong>Downton Abbey holds the record for\u00a0most nominated international TV series at the Primetime Emmy Awards, with an incredible 45 nominations.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

2.<\/strong> Maggie Smith, the actress who plays the Dowager Countess of Grantham, has three honorary doctorates, two Academy Awards, three Emmys, three Golden Globes, four Screen Actors Guild Awards and one Tony.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

3.<\/strong> Highclere Castle is 175 years old.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n
