Visit London in December and you’ll be warmly greeted by the full force of festive cheer! London does Christmas like no other city in the world with hundreds of special events taking place across the capital throughout the month. Even stoic-faced Londoners boldly embrace this magical time of year!

If you only have one day to enjoy Christmas in London, we’ve put together an easy-to-navigate itinerary which will make the most of your limited time in the city. It includes some of the best things to do in London at Christmas!

Morning – Christmas Shopping: Covent Garden, Harrods & Selfridges

Begin your day with a morning visit to bustling Covent Garden (pictured above). The popular West End district is famous for its annual Christmas decorations (this year you’ll find a 22 foot silver reindeer gleaming in the piazza) and is a perfect place to grab some breakfast and browse the Apple Market. The historic indoor market sells clothes, antiques and other unique gifts. Want to explore Covent Garden in greater depth? We offer a completely free walking tour of Covent Garden!

After spending some pennies in Covent Garden, do some window shopping and check out the magnificent Christmas displays seen in the windows of London’s best department stores. Of course you can step inside and do some shopping, but the window displays of stores such as Harrods and Selfridges are definitely worth saving some camera battery for. You’ll also see some fantastic London Christmas lights too!

Afternoon – Winter Wonderland Hyde Park

Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park is now an annual tradition and is no holds barred Christmas craziness. This sprawling attraction boasts a cute traditional Christmas market, Giant Observation wheel, Magical Ice Kingdom, roller coasters, rides, themed bars and plenty of food stalls. Lose yourself in the spirit of Christmas in this festive paradise! There’s enough cheer to occupy both adults and kids for a few hours.

Evening – Carols in Trafalgar Square and London Ice Skating

Trafalgar Square at Christmas

As the sun goes down on London (in December this can begin as early as 3.45PM), head to Trafalgar Square to see the soaring Christmas tree light up. A tree is gifted to Britain from Norway every year, standing tall and illuminated in the middle of the square for several weeks. You’ll find lots of events taking place in Trafalgar Square throughout December, including festive carol singing on selected dates.

After soaking up the Christmas atmosphere and seeing the sights around this iconic part of London, don some blades and take to the ice at one of the chilly London ice skating venues. Eyeskate at the EDF Energy London Eye lets you zoom around the ice in the shadow of the soaring wheel or skate next to a truly historical London landmark at the Tower of London ice rink.

Be aware that ice rinks in London will be very busy, and you may need to book a skating time slot in advance!
