Audley End House & Gardens

See what’s new at Audley End House and enjoy a great day out at one of England’s grandest stately homes. The doors of our restored historic stables recently opened, complete with resident horses and a Victorian groom. Our new stables experience includes an exhibition where you can find out about the workers who lived on the estate in the 1880s, the tack house and the Audley End fire engine. Try our dressing up clothes in the stables and meet our horses, Captain, Smoke, Bonny and Duke, too. Plus, children can let loose in our brand new themed play area next to our new Cart Yard Café which is already proving very popular with visitors. Audley End House itself is a magnificent house, built to entertain royalty, and includes a Victorian Service Wing complete with kitchen, laundries and a dairy. With beautiful grounds to explore, including an impressive formal garden and the working Organic Kitchen Garden, there’s so much to see and do at Audley End House. Behind the architecture, furniture and furnishings is the story of Audley End and its successive owners – from Thomas Audley, Lord Chancellor to Henry VIII in the mid 16th century, through earls and kings, to the Neville Family in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Every great house has a great hall and Audley End is no exception.  Look for the ornate carving on the wooden screen - used to hide the servants from the gentry. The Great Hall dates from the building of the house in the early 17th century and rises through two storeys. Look for the ornate carving on the Jacobean oak screen carved with grotesque masks and pairs of male and female half figures. The screen used to hide the servants from their masters. Lose yourself in the grounds of this grand Jacobean house. Much has been done to restore Audley End's park and fine gardens to their former glory giving you magnificent outside spaces to explore. With ornamental buildings, magnificent trees and feature gardens like the Parterre and the Organic Kitchen Garden, you are sure to be delighted by all there is to discover.

The stunning pastoral parkland was designed by 'Capability' Brown and includes a pretty lake, restructured from the river Cam and a 'natural' landscape style of large trees and vast grassy areas.  Here you will find the Elysian Garden and Robert Adam's ornamental garden buildings, including the elegant Tea House bridge.  Don't miss the Temple of Concord where you can admire the house from afar.
