Chesterfield an Market

To market to market, to buy ... you'll be surprised at what you can buy at Chesterfield Market, it's just a matter of finding it among so many stalls. This traditional open air market has been going since at least 1165, when the Sheriff of Derbyshire recorded an account of £1 2s 7d from the market of Chesterfield. The town was granted a Market Charter in 1204, but early in the 1220's it outgrew its original site near the Church and moved to where you see it today.

Market days are every Monday, Friday and Saturday all year round, Flea Market every Thursday, Farmers' Market on second Thursday and last Sunday of every month and a car boot sale in Holywell Cross Car Park every Sunday.

The refurbished traditional Market Hall, originally built in 1857 'for the shelter and safeguard of market people' offers meat and fish, jewellery, sweets, watches, clothes and many speciality shops all under cover.

Crooked Spire Church:
St Mary and All Saints, the Crooked Spire Church, was built in the late 13th Century and finished around 1360. It is the largest church in Derbyshire. The Spire stands 228 feet from the ground and leans 9 feet 5 inches from its true centre. The Spire was 'twisted' when green timber was used during its construction. Then 32 tons of lead tiles were placed on top and, as the timber dried out, the weight of the lead twisted the spire.
Daily tours of the Tower to the base of the 'Crooked Spire' take place Monday to Saturday (weather and staff permitting). Tours will be advertised on a yellow notice just inside the Church entrance. This shows the time of departure and the tour takes about 40-45 minutes. In addition, regular tours take place on all summer Bank Holiday Mondays, on Medieval Market Day (27 July 2010) and during the Chesterfield Arts & Market Festival (28-30 October 2010).
