At first the fortress was made of wood known as the motte. William the Conqueror built two mottes and its approach steps which is known as bailey. The first and the second castles were destroyed one after the other in 1069 and 1190, due to anti-Jewish rioting. After the death of Henry II, it was succeeded by Richard. After its succession by Richard, a number of anti Jewish riots took place and the City authorities in York struggled to maintain control. Nearly 150 Jews fearing their safety took protection  in Clifford's Tower and some of them committed suicide and few others decided to burn the castle around them fearing of being getting captured by mob. As a result of this gruesome act, the Kings chancellor fired the York's sheriff and constable and a heavy fine was imposed on York’s citizens. The tower gives sweeping views of the city which showed its importance in controlling northern England. During the year 1245 and 1262, the fortress was again rebuilt in stone using a unique quatrefoil design. It came be known as Clifford's Tower after Roger de Clifford was executed here in 1322. From the year 1911, the castle was looked after by the Ministry of Works, and afterwards by the English Heritage. Come and visit the Clifford’s Tower know more about its history by booking your out of London destination with Golden Tours.
