Mudchute Park and Farm
One of the free London attractions, The Mudchute Park & Farm was established by the local Island community. Originally a piece of derelict land created during the last century from the spoil of construction from dredging Millwall Dock. For decades, this hidden natural wilderness of flora and fauna remained untouched. However, in 1974 the site was earmarked by the Greater London Council for the construction of a high rise estate. The resulting public campaign against these plans reflected the affection that local people and those working on the Island felt for The Mudchute. Their success secured it as the "People's Park" for the area.
The largest urban farm in the London area with 34 acres of open parkland, in the heart of the Isle of Dogs. Features horse riding, a tea shop, educational facilities, farm animals and a shop. There is also an exceptional range of plants. Mudchute Farm's wide range of farmyard animals, including sheep, pigs, horses, cows, ducks, geese and dogs, are perfect for petting. The farm, however, forms only a small part of this 31 acres of open space, which is now a major leisure and recreation resource, an official Local Nature Reserve and in every sense a "People's Park". An Equestrian Centre is located in the heart of this lush park. Catering for all riders, children and adults, from beginners to the advanced, this could be a great way to spend an afternoon with the family. Group riding lessons are held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings and all day Saturday and Sunday. Private lessons need to be booked and arranged in advance. A nature trail beginning near the Education Centre is also a great family activity. With numbered points of interest for your reference you can learn and explore at the same time. Get out in the fresh air and have fun but keep an eye out for the friendly llamas who roam the farms surrounding parklands and who are keen to join in on a family picnic!
