Museum of London Docklands

London is one of the most celebrated cities in the world and a favourite European tourist destination. Museum of London Docklands is situated in a late Georgian Grade I listed warehouse on West India Quay – at the heart of London’s historic Docklands. Museum of London Docklands explores the social and economic significance of the port of London, for a time the busiest in the world. It is the only permanent collection in London to examine the capital’s involvement in the transatlantic slave trade with the gallery London, Sugar and Slavery. Museum of London, Museum of London Docklands and Museum of London Archaeology are three separate locations uniting the collective work of Museum of London.

One of the vibrancy of London is its variety of things to see and do in London. This British capital has many of London sightseeing options that range from the medieval castle to some of the modern London attractions. Similarly, the Museum of London Docklands unlocks the history of London’s river, port and people in a spectacular Georgian warehouse. From Roman settlers to city workers, groups can explore the story of Londoners and see how the River Thames became a global gateway as it brought invaders, merchants and immigrants through one of the world’s longest serving ports into the heart of the city.

Museum of London's mission is to inspire a passion
for London by

- communicating London’s history, archaeology and contemporary cultures to a wider world,

- reaching all of London’s communities through playing a role in the debate about London,

- facilitating and contributing to  London-wide cultural and educational networks.

The Museum’s main collections are broken down into the artifact or object collections, and the documents held in our archives and library. Around seventy per cent of the collection is formed of the archive of the Port of London Authority and its predecessor dock companies and river conservancy bodies. Until its formal transfer to the Museum of London, in 1986, this material formed the largest single collection of business records in private hands in the United Kingdom. Additionally we hold the Sainsbury's business archive - the archives of the popular supermarket.

The Museum’s collections are its outstanding resource and are constantly changing. The Museum regularly adds new material, including finds from archaeological digs. The overall aim is to build up a unique resource about London and Londoners for future generations to study and enjoy.
