Peter Scott Gallery


Lancaster’s Peter Scott Gallery presents a varied programme of temporary exhibitions and associated talks. Admission is free of charge and everyone is welcome. The gallery holds the most significant collection of Royal Lancastrian ceramics in Britain, which is on permanent display in the John Chambers Ceramics Room.
The gallery houses Lancaster University’s international art collection, which includes Japanese and Chinese art, antiquities, works by twentieth century British artists and prints by significant European artists such as Dürer, Miró, Ernst and Vasarely.
The collection is not on permanent display but a number of works are shown every year as part of changing exhibitions. Please contact the gallery for information about works currently on display or to view items by appointment.

The Scott Gallery, as it was previously named was founded in 1974 and opened to the public in 1975. The original gallery was situated at the south side of campus.
The gallery currently presents a varied programme of temporary exhibitions and associated educational talks, and holds the University’s art collection.

COLLECTIONS:

Twentieth Century Art:
In the late 1960s and early 1970s Lancaster University began to build up an art collection. This collection focuses on works by contemporary British artists, and consists primarily of artist's original prints and sculpture.
The collection includes prints by major European artists such Julius Bissier, Eduardo Chillida, Andre Derain, Max Ernst and Henri Matisse, as well as the 'Constellations' series by Joan Miró.
The collection is not on permanent display but a number of works are shown as part of changing exhibitions.

Royal Lancastrian Ceramics:
The gallery houses one of the most significant collections of Royal Lancastrian ceramics and related archive material in Britain. Royal Lancastrian ceramics were made by Pilkington's Tile and Pottery Company, based at Clifton Junction near Manchester. A permanent display of Royal Lancastrian ceramics is shown in the John Chambers Ceramics Room, on the upper level of the gallery.

Chinese Art:
Lancaster University's collection includes examples of seventeenth century Chinese art as well as works by twentieth century Chinese artists. These items were collected by the eminent scientist and Honorary Research Fellow at Lancaster University, Professor Irène Manton FRS.

Antiquities:
Lancaster University collection includes a number of antiquities, the majority of which are on permanent display in the gallery's John Chambers Ceramics Room. These items were collected by the eminent scientist Professor Irène Manton FRS. The collection includes Roman, Greek and Egyptian vessels in ceramic and glass, and selection of artefacts which relate to Professor Manton's interest in the history of writing.

The gallery is located in the Great Hall Complex on Lancaster University Campus.
PARKING - please note: Recent building work at the north end of the University campus has affected the usual Visitor Parking area. Gallery visitors are advised to use the pay and display parking area by Security Reception. Left at the roundabout at the top of the main drive, and then first right. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.

Road: On the A6 between Junction 33 of the M6 and Lancaster City Centre

Rail: West Coast mainline from London Euston and other major cities

Bus: Frequent buses from Lancaster City Centre to the University. Buses 2,2x, 2A, 3 and 4 leave regularly from Lancaster Bus Station.
