Rugby Art Gallery and Museum

From the moment you walk into the museum, displays are designed to stimulate your curiosity. Steering you through Rugby's history going back more than 2,000 years. What is the story behind the school cap? How does the spark plug fit in with the heritage of Rugby? What was life like for Roman residents?

As you walk through the museum, you can share the enthusiasm of the Victorian antiquarian Matthew Bloxam, who began to unravel the mysteries of Roman Tripontium. Watch the video to find out about the painstaking research that brought the Tripontium Collection together, then discover the 2000year old pottery, jewellery and coins in the display.  In the Social History Gallery, reflect on the ups and downs of Rugby at work, at home and in the community over the past 200 years.

The Museum is situated on the first floor and aims to:
"collect and preserve the natural and cultural heritage of the Borough and to generate a greater understanding of the Borough's past through displays, and the creation of an accessible and user friendly archive"

Social History
How has Rugby changed over the past 200 years, at work, at home and in the community?
Objects and photographs donated by local people for the social history gallery evoke fascinating memories of Rugby life. The heyday of the massive BTH industrial complex and other local industries is celebrated with photographs, record books and objects contributed by former employees. The war years are remembered through military memorabilia, ration books and touching telegrams which brought pride and grief into the homes of Rugby servicemen. Visit the social history gallery to reflect on Rugby life... and to share your own memories of the town and the way it has grown.

Rugby Collection of 20th Century British Art : For more than half a century, Rugby has been collecting work by modern artists: Spencer, Freud, Lowry, Hepworth, Sutherland to name a few.

With the opening of the stunning new Art Gallery in Spring 2000, the Rugby Collection of 20th century British Art at last has a permanent home. Exhibitions of artwork from the Rugby Collection form part of the gallery programme with an extended Summer show.
