Tate Modern

One of the highly famed modern London attractions is the Tate Modern. The Tate Modern Gallery is situated at the former Bankside Power Station, London. It is a very striking and distinguished building, designed by the architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and was in an amazing location on the south bank of the River Thames opposite St Paul's Cathedral and the City of London. By about 1990 it was clear that the Tate Collection had hugely outgrown the original Tate Gallery on Millbank. It was decided to create a new gallery in London to display the international modern component of the Tate Collection. For the first time London would have a dedicated museum of modern art. Tate Modern has become a major London tourist destination which attracts more visitors from all round the world .Tate Modern is the national gallery of international modern art. Located in London, it is one of the families of four Tate galleries which display selections from the Tate Collection. The Collection comprises the national collection of British art from the year 1500 to the present day, and of international modern art. Created in the year 2000 from a disused power station in the heart of London, Tate Modern displays the national collection of international modern art and sculpture at the Victoria & Albert Museum. Tate Modern includes modern British art where it contributes to the story of modern art, so major modern British artists may be found at both Tate Modern and Tate Britain. In your London visit, a visit to Tate Modern is a must.

The Tate collection of modern art is displayed on two of the gallery floors, the third is devoted to temporary exhibitions. At the heart of each wing is a large central display, or ‘hub’, which focuses on a key period in the development of twentieth century art. These displays reflect the ongoing dialogue between past and present and suggest contemporary perspectives for approaching and reassessing the past. The London bus tours are the perfect way to sit back, relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of London. Above the original roofline of the power station Herzog and De Meuron added a two-storey glass penthouse, known as the lightbeam. The top level of this houses a café restaurant with stunning views of the river and the City, and the lower a member’s room with terraces on both sides of the building, the river side one offering the same stunning views as the restaurant. The chimney was capped by a coloured light feature designed by the artist Michael Craig Martin, known as the Swiss Light. At night, the penthouse lightbeam and the Swiss Light mark the presence of Tate Modern for many miles. In your London sightseeing with children a visit to the Tate Modern is unavoidable. The Children can gather a lot of information from the various programs and activities that conducted here. The Tate Modern conducts special exhibitions also.
