The Golden Hind

The Golden Hind captained by Sir Francis Drake undertook one of the most historic and exciting voyages of all time. Between 1577 and 1580 the Golden Hind circumnavigated the world making vital discoveries before returning home with amazing treasures.
This ship now offers an amazing insight into life onboard a 16th century sailing ship and is based in Brixham, Devon the area where Sir Francis Drake lived and worked.

The Golden Hind Museum ship has been based in Brixham harbour since 1963 during which time it has enthralled many thousands of visitors both young and old alike. 400 years after the death of Sir Francis Drake there is still massive worldwide interest in this remarkable man and his achievements.

Sir Francis Drake was the first Englishman and first captain to circumnavigate the globe. This incredible achievement elevated Drake to hero status in England and became one of the most famous private citizens in the western World

The treasures recovered were so vast, estimated at £600,000 in 1580 (around £25 million today) that Elizabeth I share was more than the total exchequers receipts for a year, twice the costs of fighting the Spanish Armada in 1588 and probably accounted for why the crown was free of debt in the year after Drakes return.
