The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum

The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum is named after Sir Alfred Herbert, a local industrialist who founded Alfred Herbert Limited, at one time the world's largest machine toolmaking company.

The Herbert's diverse collection is displayed across a number of themed galleries that feature not only important exhibits but also a range of interactive displays.

Lady Godiva is one of the most famous people from Coventry's history.
This gallery shows how Godiva's legacy has survived to the present and looks at the historical Godiva. The gallery displays objects from the many Godiva processions that have taken place in Coventry over the years and features works from our art collection inspired by the Godiva story.

History Gallery:
Focusing on three important periods from Coventry's past - the medieval, the Victorian and the modern.
Coventry has played a pivotal role in British history, from the Wars of the Roses in the 15th century and the city's industrial transformation in late Victorian times, to its rebirth from the ashes of the Second World War, including its post war economic boom.
This gallery explores three of these periods in detail and shows how each played a major role in shaping the city we see today.

Medieval Coventry
The first part of the History Gallery looks at life in late medieval Coventry from 1450 to 1509. In many ways this was a golden age for the city as Coventry was the largest city in the Midlands and one of the most important in England. It was a thriving commercial centre with a population of around 10000 merchants, craftspeople, monks and labourers.
