Tutankhamun Exhibition
The Tutankhamun Exhibition has attracted worldwide acclaim since it opened in 1987, as the then successor to the Treasures of Tutankhamun Exhibition at the British Museum in London. It is the only exhibition outside Egypt where it is possible to see the most popular of Tutankhamun’s treasures the magnificent Gold Mask, and the Golden Throne. It is also the only exhibition in which you can see the awesome mummy of Tutankhamun. This anatomically correct mummy has taken technicians two years to recreate using all the available evidence and information on the mummy. The mummy is based on a medical skeleton that has been altered to identically match that of Tutankhamun. The exterior of the mummy has been covered with real skin, though not human, specially treated so that it mummified and cracked in exactly the same way as the mummy, now still in its sarcophagus in the tomb kv62 in the Valley of the Kings.
So accurate are the recreated tomb and treasures that they have been used by publishers to illustrate books on Tutankhamun whilst filmmakers and television companies worldwide have extensively used them for their documentary productions on the young king and the discovery of his tomb.
This World Heritage Exhibition, currently shown in Dorchester, is the original Tutankhamun Exhibition established following the success of the Treasures of Tutankhamun Exhibition at the British Museum London. The Exhibition is unique for its innovative approach. It features Tutankhamun's major treasures meticulously recreated, wherever possible, in their original materials, and has been extensively featured in television programmes and major documentaries on Tutankhamun throughout the world.
In addition, the ante-chamber and burial chamber Tutankhamun's tomb have been accurately recreated together with all the tomb furniture and treasures making it possible for you to experience the wonder of discovery and enter the tomb just as Howard Carter did when he discovered it in 1922.
The Tutankhamun Exhibition in Dorchester was the first exhibition outside Egypt to feature an exact anatomical recreation of Tutankhamun's mummy. The mummy took over two years of research and experimentation to recreate, following x-rays and measurements of Tutankhamun's mummy.
During its twenty years the Exhibition has been seen by visitors from all over Britain and many parts of the world exceeding most attendance records.
The Tutankhamun Exhibition features amongst many wonderful treasures: The Golden Mask of Tutankhamun, The Golden Throne of Tutankhamun, Tutankhamun's mummy. The Golden figure of Tutankhamun the Harpooner. A selection of Tutankhamun's jewels is also displayed. Our exhibition is a top Dorset attraction popular with families and schools.
