Woburn Safari Park

Woburn Safari Park opened in 1970 and was the second Safari park to open after Longleat in the UK. Today it is an award winning attraction which makes a valuable contribution to conservation. Most of all, it is a place where families can enjoy being together and seeing animals in a beautiful environment

Woburn has been deeply involved with species conservation for over a hundred years. Today, the Safari Park is internationally recognised as a centre of excellence for the conservation of endangered wildlife.
The approach to conservation has changed drastically over the past few decades. It's not a simple matter of breeding endangered animals in captivity and then sending them back to where they came from. Without political stability in the home country, adequate resources and a guaranteed safe environment with sufficient food, such action would be cruel, irresponsible and utterly pointless.
Today, animal conservation is international, founded on co-operation and the sharing of information. Woburn participates in the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) and the European Studbook (ESB).
Breeding programmes are managed with the help of studbooks that chronicle the family trees of animals held in zoos and parks.

Woburn plays its part in this area by managing the European Studbook for the Mountain Bongo, assisting in the development of a global captive action plan for rhinos and providing advice and assistance to many conservation and animal welfare organisations.

Fundraising Go Bonkers for Bongo in 2010: The Bongo is one of the most endangered mammals in Africa today. It is believed that there are as few as 65-100 Eastern Bongo left in the wild; most of which are found living in the Aberdare forest region in Kenya.
In 2010, Woburn Safari Park will be concentrating its fundraising on the Eastern Mountain

The fun and fundraising begins at 3pm and runs until 9pm when Woburn Safari Park closes. Last entry to the drive-through safari where you can see the magnificent bongos for yourself is at 7.30pm.

Evening activities include:
Evening drive-through safari
Mammoth Play Ark (soft play)
Arts and Crafts
Bongo Art Competition for Children
Games and Activities
Face Painting
Theatrical play and much, much more!

Woburn Safari Park is actively working together with the Bongo Surveillance Programme and Kenya Wildlife Service to develop a conservation strategy and provide crucial funding to not only help support the rangers protecting this species from poachers, but to help monitor the numbers left in the wild and to educate local schools in Kenya of the benefits these creatures present to their habitat.
