Tower of Hamlets
Spring is on its way, so why not get out and about and discover Tower Hamlets, one of London's most varied boroughs. Home to some of London's oldest and newest buildings, Tower Hamlets is full of great places to visit. Self-guided walks are available for historic Spitalfields, the renovated docks areas of Wapping and Limehouse, and the old Jewish East End.
LONDON ATTRACTIONS at TOWER OF HAMLETS:
London's Movie Maps:
If the 21st century is more your style, then use the Canary Wharf Movie Map to visit some amazing docklands locations, used in recent blockbuster films. There are great walks along the canals and waterways too, where many of the best pubs and restaurants are located.
The Museum in Docklands, London:
The Museum in Docklands tells the history of London's 2000 years as a port, and is housed in a converted 18th century rum warehouse, right by West India Quay.
Canary Wharf and Mile End Park:
Some of Canary Wharf's most stunning high-rise buildings and well-stocked shopping malls are nearby, with over 200 shops, bars and restaurants to cater for visitors. The first Dr Barnardo's school for poor children now houses the Ragged School Museum and is close to Mile End Park, with its amazing ecology centre, arts pavilion and grass-covered green bridge.
Spitalfields and Brick Lane:
For the best in independent fashion and music shops, head to Spitalfields and Brick Lane.
Old Spitalfields Market is surrounded by bright independent shops, and the market is full of hand-made craft, fashion and gift stalls. The market is busiest on Sundays, though you’ll find other stalls there Monday to Friday.
Nearby in the Old Truman Brewery just off Brick Lane, you'll find plenty of retro and vintage clothes shops, and the latest in pop art and music. Sunday (Up) Market here is a great place to chill out, with more crafts and fashion stalls and live music too.
Columbia Road Flower Market:
Columbia Road's Sunday flower market – open 8am-2pm every Sunday – is a must-see. If you're not a gardener, you can always enjoy browsing in the independent craft shops along this narrow cobbled street.
London Eastside is the place to find the "real London", according to the latest Lonely Planet Guide. London Eastside is full of surprises – you're guaranteed to find something new every time you visit.
