Discover the opulent and delectable world of Champagne Afternoon Tea at Theatre Royal Drury Lane. One of the oldest theatre sites in the world, and visited by every British Monarch since 1660, where better to experience a quintessentially British custom than here?
This spectacular afternoon ritual started in 1840 when Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford described a ‘sinking feeling’ around 5pm. She requested that tea, bread and butter, and of course, cake be brought to her room. This quickly became a daily habit, eventually spreading across the upper circles – and truth be told, who wouldn’t say yes to a slice of cake and another cup of tea?
Hosted in the elegant Grand Saloon, it is under sparkling chandeliers, ornate ceilings, and fine art that you too can feast upon a specially crafted menu by baker to the stars, Lily Vanilli. Expect warm, golden scones with salted whipped butter, cream, and jam as you sip from a selection of teas and Taittinger Champagne.
Why not indulge in pink lemonade tarts with elderflower jelly, sticky toffee puddings with custard and salted caramel, and a rich, dark chocolate cake with a biscuit crunch and chocolate cherub on top. There’s also a trolley you can summon serving absinthe and mint chocolate chip ice cream.
Savoury treats to delight in include Lily Vanilli’s Cornish sausage roll, goat’s cheese and pickled beetroot canelés, and the lapsang-souchong glazed salmon and caviar topped madeleines.
The afternoon tea at Theatre Royal Drury Lane is not one to be missed. Surrounded by Regency grandeur and exquisite treats, it makes for an unforgettable experience and the perfect treat for any occasion.
